Champions League-winning coaches Pep Guardiola and Jonatan Giráldez were voted on FIFA final shortlists announced Wednesday in a race to be named the world’s best in 2023.
Guardiola guided Manchester City to a trophy treble last season and is among three candidates with Simone Inzaghi and Luciano Spalletti for the FIFA Best Coach award in men’s soccer.
Inzaghi took Inter Milan to the Champions League final against City and Spalletti led Napoli to a first Serie A title for 33 years.
Giráldez heads the candidates for the Best Coach award in women’s soccer after Barcelona won the Spanish league, then the European title having eliminated Chelsea in the semifinals.
Chelsea’s Emma Hayes, whose team won the English league and cup double, is shortlisted with Sarina Wiegman, coach of the England team that lost the Women’s World Cup final to Spain.
Hayes, who will coach the United States women’s team next season, won the FIFA award in 2021 and Wiegman is a three-time winner.
Both three-coach shortlists were voted on from five initial candidates by a jury of national team captains and coaches, selected media and fans worldwide.
Manchester City will want to maintain their flawless record in the Champions League when they travel to Serbia for the final group game against Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday.
City have not only already secured their place in the knockout stages, while Red Star have no hope of even reaching the Europa League.
However, Pep Guardiola’s men have not been showcasing the form that saw them win the treble last season, having to come from behind against Luton on Sunday to secure a victory to end a four-game winless run.
City will be without Erling Haaland, who did not take part in training ahead of the fixture, so Julian Alvarez could be called upon to lead the line.
No injury concerns have been reported by Red Star in the lead-up to this match, potentially providing Bakhar with a fully-fit squad for selection.
Osman Bukari, who previously scored against Man City at the Etihad, and Jean-Philippe Krasso have collectively contributed 15 goals this season. The attacking pair is expected to play a key role in this game as well.
Man City have a few players unavailable for this fixture. Erling Haaland is sidelined due to an injury, and Jeremy Doku is expected to be out for one or two weeks with a muscle problem. Kevin De Bruyne is still in the recovery phase from a hamstring injury.
